REALTOR® Center

What is a REALTOR® Association?

The REALTOR® organization is a "federation" or a "union" of organizations held together by the Three-Way Agreement, which provides a framework for effective communication, delivery of goods and services, and enforcement of the REALTORS® Code of Ethics. With this agreement, which forms the basis of the structure of the REALTOR® organization, the National Association grants each state and local association the right to control the terms "REALTOR®" and "REALTOR-ASSOCIATE®" within its territorial jurisdiction. It also permits associations to allow individuals who are qualified for membership to use the terms REALTOR® and REALTOR-ASSOCIATE®. In turn, the state associations and local boards and associations agree to:

  • accept the charge of properly granting and regulating the use of the terms "REALTOR®" and "REALTOR-ASSOCIATE®"

  • subscribe to and enforce the Code of Ethics of the National Association

This federated structure allows the REALTOR® organization to use its combined resources (both human and financial) and influence to have a unified, powerful voice in shaping public policy, set recognized standards for ethical real estate practice, and contribute to the betterment of the real estate industry.

The value of National Association of REALTORS membership.

As REALTORS® we believe that fairness is worth fighting for, and we won’t stop until the fight is won. Because #ThatsWhoWeR

Membership Pays!

Membership in all three levels of the REALTOR® organization brings a myriad of benefits to today's real estate licensees and licensed appraisers.

Each level has it's own benefit:

  • Professional standards, continuing education, peer networking, and access to the Multiple Listing Service are among the top reasons that it pays to be a member of the local REALTOR® Family.

  • At the state level standard forms, meetings, networking, and the legal hotline are sure bets.

  • At the national level political advocacy, industry news, and business support top the list.

Code of Ethics

NAR's Code of Ethics, adopted in 1913, was one of the first codifications of ethical duties adopted by any business group. The Code ensures that consumers are served by requiring REALTORS® to cooperate with each other in furthering clients' best interests.

As REALTORS®, our success isn’t measured by the bottom line. It’s measured by the trust of our clients and customers and the esteem in which we’re held by our colleagues and competitors. The National Association was founded with the goal of uniting the real estate profession through high standards to protect buyers and sellers. Over 100 years after its adoption, the Code of Ethics continues to be what sets us apart as REALTORS®.

The Code of Ethics

Silver City Regional Association of REALTORS® has adopted the Code of Ethics of the National Association as a part of its governing regulations for violation of which disciplinary action may be taken.

Professional Standards

REALTORS® are different from non-member licensees in that they voluntarily subscribe to a strict Code of Ethics. If you believe that a REALTOR® has violated one or more Articles of the Code of Ethics, you can file an ethics complaint alleging a violation(s) through the local association of REALTORS® where the REALTOR® holds membership, or participates in a REALTOR® association-owned/operated MLS.

Boards and associations of REALTORS® are responsible for enforcing the REALTORS® Code of Ethics. The Code of Ethics imposes duties above and in addition to those imposed by law or regulation which apply only to real estate professionals who choose to become REALTORS®.
